Recently, China declared
that one of its top three concerns were the state of the increasing
influx of migrant workers to urban centers in the nation. Today, there is an estimated 150-200 million migrant workers who have flooded
into cities. Because they cannot meet the needs for their families,
they are moving from rural / remote areas to obtain work in
the “industrial” city centers. Whereas China was once 70:30 (rural to city), that has changed
to 60:40 in just a few years. It is estimated that in the next
20 years that the number will be completely reversed (70 city:
30 rural). Chinese Migrant workers are generally deprived labor
rights, proper wages, property ownership, free education of
their children and are subject to deportation and legal ramifications
(including fines) at any given time. These immigrants have
formed “communities” within cities or just on the outskirts as a means of survival. Often these communities
are “slums” by modern standards and lack the necessary social and physical amenities. These
communities are breeding grounds for gang related activity,
and social injustice. Chinese migrants find themselves unable
to send their kids to school, unable to regularly feed their
family, and in some cases unable to provide basic health needs.
ASI is responding to this need by providing
a holistic approach to aiding these communities.
The goal of the Chinese Migrant Initiative is to provide proper infrastructure
that will build up the communities where migrants live. ASI Personnel
provide a detailed analysis of the needs of the community in areas such
as:
Education
Health
Business
Christian Spiritual Development
A strategic plan is then developed to provide long term stability to
the community. The use of both national and foreign workers is vital
to the success of this initiative.
